I’m a first responder that went to this and we’re now estimating over 8K gallons of fuel oil mix. It starts at the Heartland Refinery plant and has been found all the way towards Groveport.

The article actually isn't accurate in saying the oil spill happened in the Gulf. It happened within the bird's foot delta a few miles from where the Mississippi empties into the Gulf itself,  specifically in the Pass A Loutre Wildlife Management Area, well within the Louisiana border. I do research in this area all the time, and am not looking forward to dealing with this in the upcoming weeks.

Did you already start the car? Starting the car would fill the filter and bring the level down a bit?

Or you can always run the car for like 10 seconds and then drain the filter once and see if that brings it down enough (this works with spin on filters).

Won't hurt a thing. If your vehicle use's oil, you're a step ahead. I put a quart to much in one time and left it because it used almost a quart between changes and it only used half of it. Wouldn't do it every time though.

Not even close to a problem.  There is probably still 2 or 3 inches from that level up to the bottom of the crankshaft counter weights.  You fools do realize that most all garden equipment runs with the crankshaft dipped into the oil and they lubricate them selves by throwing oil all over the inside of the crankcase.  The biggest problem with over filled is the unnecessary power used whipping that oil around.  I know a bunch of you brain surgeons are going to say "but it will be whipped into a foam and won't lubricate" but remember the briggs and stratton lawn mower mentioned above.  Go home tonight and take a cup or two of your favorite oil, heat it up to 200 degrees, pour it into the big stainless steel mixing bowl of your wifes Kitchen Aid Mixer and using the whisk (the thing with all the loops of wire) Whip that oil into a foam.  Like whipped cream.  Send pictures, I want to see your valvoline 5w20 mousse.

The risk from overfilling is that the oil level could be high enough that the crank hits the oil as it is spinning &amp; starts frothing it.  I doubt you're in that situation here.  But you could drain it if you are worried.

Have you started it to get oil in the filter? Looks like a Honda k-series so I know the filter mounts horizontally and you can’t pre-fill it. If you haven’t run it yet, just run it for a minute or two, let it sit for 10min, then recheck. It’ll be pretty close to that top dot

To be on the safe side, I would drain it a bit. It can cause overpressure &amp; leaks. Had that issue with my tranny fluid for a while, when I bought it it was way overfilled

That’s only a tiny touch over and wouldn’t be too much of a concern. Hole to hole is usually about 1ltr to assist in topping off. Half way between them, you know 500ml will get you very close to perfect level.

That’s fine. The moment you start the engine a quart are two of oil gets pumped up into the top of the engine and sticks to all the internal surfaces before it drops back down. So when the engine is running, the level will be at or below the full mark, you’ll be totally fine. You have to grossly overfill an engine to cause issues, like 5 quarts or more over full.

If you have a manual fuel suction pump you could slide it down the dipstick hole and suck up a little until it's within the dots or you can crack the coil drain plug and drain maybe a coke bottles worth 500ml. Don't fully remove the drain plug just open it up until it starts dripping, then slowly turn until you get a gentle trickle. Fill up the bottle and check. If it's still too high, do it again and again until  you get the required amount.  

But in all honestly over filling by that much won't cause damage. It might spit oil in to the breather hoses which will burn off over time.
